Making Learning Fun: How Engagement Brings Concepts to Life at CHHS

At Cumballa Hill High School, we believe that education is most effective when it excites curiosity and sparks imagination. Children learn best when they can see, touch, and experience concepts for themselves. It is when lessons go beyond the textbook and transform into something they can play with, question, and enjoy that the child truly understands the topics.

This philosophy was beautifully reflected in a recent Std 4 Mathematics activity on geometrical figures. Instead of approaching shapes through routine diagrams and memorization, our students were introduced to the world of tangrams; simple shapes that can be combined in endless ways. With flashcards as prompts, the classroom quickly turned into a lively workshop of both mathematicians and artists.

From rabbits and swans to turtles and more, the children pieced together animals out of triangles, squares, and parallelograms. Each attempt demanded not only mathematical precision but also creativity and imagination. The students learned that geometry is not an abstract concept locked away in a textbook but a living tool that helps us see and recreate the world around us.

This activity highlights a broader truth about education: when concepts are taught in a way that connects to a child’s natural curiosity, the learning becomes deeper and longer-lasting. Just as geometry came alive through tangrams, so too can science, history, and language flourish when taught through exploration, creativity, and real-world application.

At CHHS, we are committed to creating such opportunities across subjects. By blending structured knowledge with imagination, we aim to nurture not just strong learners but also confident thinkers who see knowledge as something alive, useful, and fun.

After all, education is not just about memorizing answers but instead it’s more about discovering connections, and understanding.
