The Importance of Music

In a world that often measures success in grades, ranks, and results, music offers children a way for children to think creatively, and express themselves. Long before they learn to structure essays or solve equations, children respond instinctively to rhythm and melody.

So at CHHS we believe music is so much more than just another extracurricular activity; it is a vital part of childhood development.

When a child learns music, they are doing far more than memorising lyrics or mastering notes. They are training their minds to think in a completely different way. Additionally, they are developing patience through practice, resilience through mistakes, and discipline through repetition. These lessons extend naturally into academics and everyday life.

But the true power of music lies beyond cognitive growth. It lies in confidence.

For many children, stepping onto a stage for the first time is a defining moment. The nervous anticipation before a performance, the steady breath before the first note, the applause at the end.

Equally important is music’s role in emotional expression. Children often feel emotions intensely but struggle to articulate them. Music becomes a language for them to express themselves. This emotional awareness is foundational for empathy and healthy relationships.

Music also teaches collaboration in a way few other activities can. In a choir, no voice stands alone. In a band, harmony depends on listening to others. Children learn timing, teamwork, and mutual respect. They understand that something beautiful is created not by competition, but by cooperation.

Years later, children may forget specific lessons or textbook chapters. But they will remember the song they sang with their friends. They will remember the stage lights. They will remember the feeling of confidence that came from completing something challenging.

In nurturing music in schools, we are not merely teaching children how to sing or play an instrument. We are helping them build confidence, resilience, empathy, and joy. We are giving them a voice, and teaching them to use it.
